Global Warming is an average increase in the temperature of the atmosphere,
which contributes to changes in global climate patterns. Global warming often
refers to the warming that can occur as a result of increased emissions of
greenhouse gases from human activities. Since the Industrial Revolution (about
1760), we have significantly added greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by
burning fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal).
Fossil fuels are burned to run cars, homes, planes, factories and power plants.
Over the years, the increased level of greenhouse gases has drastically altered
the chemical composition of the atmosphere. The build-up of these gases has
created a thick “blanket” around the earth, trapping excess heat that would
have otherwise escaped.
