How It Is Calculated
Your flight emissions report is an approximation of the impact your air travel has
on global warming. We calculate your emissions by first categorizing your
flight(s) as a short, cross-country or international flight. We use an average for
each flight category which corresponds to the number of miles flown. We then
multiply this average by a carbon index.

The carbon index represents the amount of fuel burned per mile flown. There are different carbon indexes based on different flight lengths. Aircrafts consume more fuel during takeoffs and landings than at cruising altitudes. Therefore, short flights are less fuel efficient than long flights.

We disregard variables such as type of plane, number of passengers, layovers, etc. For that reason, your emissions report is not 100% accurate, it is just an estimate.
